City officials recently presented an alternative to placing the Gowanus Canal on the Superfund site list under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The alternative proposal would have the Army Corps of Engineers conduct their own study and clean up of the site but still funded by the federal government. City officials claim that this new plan will reduce the amount of time it will take to cleanup the site as well as increase the likelihood that those responsible for polluting will assist. However, EPA officials doubt that the new plan will be advantageous as it may make the project more difficult because it includes the participation of the Army Corps of Engineers and is dependent on federal funds, which are often difficult to obtain. The EPA will continue to hear public comments on the Gowanus Canal proposal until July 8th.
